You’ve got big dreams. Now what? I’m going to take a wild guess here. If you’re reading this letter, you have some level of ambition. You’re determined to succeed in business, relationships, parenthood, education -- or all of the above. Did I get it right? 

I’ve had some pretty incredible mentors and role models in my leadership journey. But one of them always surprises people: Prince Rogers Nelson. Yes, the Prince. When I was a kid, I had Prince and Michael Jackson on repeat. While I was bebopping around the house to the Top 40 station, you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t a star right alongside them.

Sisterhood is powerful. That phrase is more than just a slogan of the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s. It’s just as relevant today as a reminder that when women support other women, magic happens. Supporting other women not only makes you more likely to succeed, it also means you’re taking real steps to create a better world for everyone.

Because honestly, it seems a bit like a set up! Especially over the last few years where it feels like the world moves from one crisis to another. Like before we’ve had time to absorb one shock, here comes another one.

One of the best things you can do for your career is engage with a mentor. But let’s be honest. Despite the many benefits of mentorship, a formal mentor-mentee relationship is not without its barriers. It can be difficult to find the right mentor person to ask.

Here’s something we know about smart, ambitious women like you. Whether you’re just starting out in your career or you’re enjoying your hard-won success, you are extremely good at taking care of business.  You pursue your goals and make it look effortless. You’re the one they count on to get it done. 

You’ve probably heard the term “unconscious bias.” And if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced it in at least some form. Unconscious bias is really just a social stereotype someone forms about a group — or “type”–  of people.

As women, our biggest hurdle to professional success isn’t a glass ceiling; it’s a broken rung — that first step of being promoted from entry-level roles to managers. Passing that first rung on the ladder happens less often and at a slower pace for women, which is a systemic barrier to entry we need to fix.
